Lost and Found Pets

If your pet is lost:

  • Search the area.  Get a team of friends and family together to search the area where the pet was lost.  Be sure to call the pet by name.  Ask neighbors for permission to search their yards, sheds, etc in-case the pet is hiding or trapped.

  • Get the word out

    • Flyers.  Put up flyers with your pet’s photo, description, location where pet was last seen, and your contact information around the area where your pet was lost as well as local businesses.  Go door-to-door and distribute flyers to neighbors.

    • Phonecalls.  Call the local animal shelters and veterinary clinics and report the pet missing.

    • Online.  Post an ad to Craigslist.com Lost and Found page with your pet’s description and photo-http://raleigh.craigslist.org/search/laf .  Post to local Facebook groups dedicated to helping reunite pets and their owners- like https://www.facebook.com/LostFoundDogs.NC?fref=ts .  Post about your lost pet on social media sites and ask your friends to share the posts online.

  • Visit local animal shelters DAILY.  Although shelters are required by law to scan found pets for microchips, don’t chance it.  If you’re pet is not microchipped, don’t rely on shelter staff to identify your pet based on your over-the-phone description.

If you find a lost pet:

  • Use caution.  Lost pets may be frightened or injured.  Do not attempt to handle a lost pet if you can not safely do so.  Contact your local Animal Control for help.  If you take a pet into your home, keep it confined from other pets in the household in case the pet is ill or becomes frightened or aggressive.

  • Scan for a Microchip.  Take to the pet to a local animal shelter or veterinary clinic to have the pet scanned for a microchip.  If the pet has a microchip, the information can be used to reunite the pet with its owner.

  • Contact local animal shelters.  Call local animal shelters and make a report of the found pet.

  • Search and post online.  Check your local Craigslist.com lost and found listings and post about the found pet as well- http://raleigh.craigslist.org/search/laf .  Check and post to local Facebook groups dedicated to reuniting lost pet with their owners- like https://www.facebook.com/LostFoundDogs.NC?fref=ts .  Post about the pet on your own social media pages and ask friends and family to share online.  Take a photo to include with postings if possible.

  • Make flyers.  Make flyers with the pet’s description, where the pet was found, and your contact information.  Include a photo if possible.  Post the flyers around neighborhoods and businesses in the area where the pet was found.
